Description
Description provided by the California Division of Highways with the photo indicates this shows Emigrant Gap on new Interstate 80 looking east. Observation point in the foreground overlooks Bear Valley where emigrants dropped their wagons by rope to the valley below (left). Highway design engineers solved a complex problem for this section where a single narrow mountain ridge had to accommodate the old highway, the new freeway, utility lines and a double set of railroad tracks. To accomplish this, they reduced the median width and built a concrete tunnel for the trains which underpasses the freeway (lower center).
