Description
This March 11, 1931, photograph shows the Byzantine Italianate-style Westminster Presbyterian Church as it rests at the corner of Thirteenth and N Streets. It was dedicated on December 18, 1927, to its capacity of 1,300 members, with presiding Pastor being Dr. Sherman L. Divine who came to Sacramento a few years earlier with the reputation of being church builder, having headed campaigns for five Presbyterian churches previous. The dome of the church, with a diameter of 60 feet, rises 87 feet above the nave, while its tower reaches 137 feet above street level. Designed by Sacramento architects James and Charles Dean, the church won the 1929 Certificate of Honor, as awarded by the American Institute of Architecture. Dean and Dean were also responsible for the Memorial Auditorium and Sutter Club, two buildings with similar Byzantine nuances. The primary inspiration for Westminster was Istanbul’s Saint Sophia Mosque, which was previous to 1453, a Christian cathedral.
