Description
Photograph of an exterior view of the Temple Building, Los Angeles, ca.1872. Tree foliage obscures the scene in the lower left hand corner, beyond which the three-story multileveled Temple Building is visible, the clock tower extending from the center of its roof reading approximately five minutes to one o'clock. Horse-drawn carriages stand to the right in front of one of the building's broad sides, the second floor of which has a balcony. Signs also advertise, painted on the side: "E.B. Frink & Co. Real Estate Agents" and "Wolfenstein's Photographic Gallery.". Main Street is situated behind the tree to the left. The building was the first Los Angeles County Court House, built in 1859 by John Temple and then rented to the county as well as vendors. The two-story Temple adobe was later torn down and replaced by the three-story Temple Block, built by F.P.F. "Templito" in 1871.
