Description
This May 1902 photograph depicts Sacramento Street Fair Queen Fay Jackson. George E. Foote (left) and Friend W. Richardson (right) drive the carriage.
Fair contributors elected Jackson through a popular vote. Jackson was a late entry in the May Queen contest but gained support quickly, advancing to fifth place within a day and third within two, taking the top rank within ten days. The Sacramento Bee reported the rankings on a regular basis throughout the voting period, noting the rivalry between the women with alternating turns in first place. Fair organizers announced Jackson's victory on May 6, 1902. She married Rudolph W. Van Norden in October of 1904. The couple moved to San Francisco where she joined the League of American Pen Women as a poet and songwriter. She died in 1929 after a prolonged illness.
Two competitors dropped out before the end of the election, alleging favoritism on the part of the fair committee.
