Description
Annotation translation: [Text on the rear]: It was in the year 1733 that the first Moravian missionaries trod the icy coasts of Greenland, built themselves a settlement near the Danish factory of Godthaab and called it New Herrnhut. The Eskimo were hostile, and sought originally to kill the missionaries, but the story of Jesus' agony in Gethsemane so impressed the magician Kajarnak that he had himself baptised, with his whole family, in 1739. Other non-christians soon followed his example, and the number of mission stations went up to 6. After 150 ears of missionary work the christian congregations could be received into the Danish Evangelical Church a few years ago. Greenland is now wholly christianised. This picture of the confirmation class in the mission station Friedrichsthal speaks of the true pastoral care given by the missionaries to the youth of Greenland, and the rich blessing their work has brought to the congregations."
Note translation: Belongs to a series of coloured postcards with very orthodox mission texts on the rear side which were almost certainly produced in Germany in the years before 1914. (PJ 07.2002).
