Waist-length portrait.
1990-1692.
Born in St. Louis Missouri in 1825. Parents emigrated to the U.S. from Scotland. Served in the war with Mexico in 1847. Came to California in 1849 via Isthmus, settling in San Francisco. Practiced law, served on the ayuntamiento or town council, became judge in 1850. Appointed to Supreme Court of California, eventually becoming Chief Justice. Died in 1857.
