Description
A variety of English coat styles for men are shown in this illustration for March, 1855. Seven men are divided into two groups by the illustrator, the first group gathers around a man sitting in a chair, and the second group gathers around a man leaning against a low wall. The outdoors scene is in an unpaved area, with the white wall and many green trees in the background. The first man on the far left wears a black thigh-length, loose-fitting coat over his outfit of a high-collared, white pleated shirt, blue cravat, pink waistcoat, and Tattersall plaid black and gray trousers with a brown or purple wide stripe down the sides. The lounge coat has wide, loose-fitting sleeves. He wears black heeled boots or shoes, a dark gray top hat, tan gloves, and carries a walking stick. Next to him, sitting in the chair, is a man wearing light brown trousers that have black braiding or embroidery in a repeating floral pattern down the sides. He wears a white shirt, blue cravat, and a black coat with silk lapels and wide silk cuffs. He wears yellow gloves and black heeled shoes and is smoking a thin cigar. His hair is parted down the center and he has long sideburns. No one in the party wears a mustache. The third man wears a dove-gray, knee-length overcoat over a black, double-breasted frock coat, waistcoat, white shirt, maroon cravat, and dark trousers. To complete his outfit he wears black heeled shoes, yellow gloves, a black top hat and he wears long "mutton-chop" sideburns. The fourth man wears a white pleated shirt with a green cravat, and a matching suit of waistcoat and trousers in a small black and brown Tattersall plaid. Over this he wears a knee-length blue frock coat with wide lapels. To complete his outfit he wears black heeled shoes, yellow gloves, a black top hat, and carries a walking stick. Three men comprise the second group: the first man on the left is outfitted for hunting with his shotgun and leather shoulder bag. Over his white shirt and brown striped trousers he wears a short, black flecked gray tweed wool coat with flap pockets at the breast and hips. He wears black heeled boots, tan gloves, and a brown felt hat. His sideburns are also in the "mutton-chop" fashion of the day. Leaning against the wall is the second man of the group who wears riding costume. He wears gray breeches tucked into knee-high black leather riding boots, a white pleated shirt, black cravat, and a bottle green, double-breasted tailed coat. To complete his outfit he wears yellow gloves, a dark gray top hat, and he carries a riding crop. His sideburns are also in the long, "mutton-chop" fashion. The last man on the right wears slim gray green trousers and a knee-length blue frock. Like the man at the center, he wears black heeled shoes, a black top hat and carries a red walking stick.
