Description
A completed wax design on light blue fabric. The design has yet to be dipped and dyed in indigo. The design will become the centerpiece for a baby carrier (Daim Nyias, Dlaim Hlaab Nyas). The motifs pictured include x-shaped cross-hatching design in the background, hook (tus khawb) shapes representing cucumber flowers, and fences (laj kab). The prevalent cross-hatching design is connected to the fence motif, which is used to imbue a sense of protection and safety over babies. Rows of seeds (noob) represented by white dots create a border around the central design. Handwritten caption on mat board reads, "Baby Carrier Center / Design 5." Notes on verso read: "HMong Baby Carrier #5 (Photo 5). Lewis Judy. *HMO.4052.00* Fall 2002" [printed label, upper left verso]; "L.FC." [handwritten black ink, lower left verso]; "FEB 12 1987" [stamped red ink, lower left verso]" Original title from SEACRC: HMong: Baby carrier and seed pillows (18 photos)
