Description
Photograph is oriented with north at the top of the photo. Printed along the left edge of the photo are "1-2-83", "83001" and "176". About two inches below the top edge is Baseline Road which runs east-west. The strip of empty lots below Baseline will eventually become the California Route 210 freeway. A tree-dotted Foothill Boulevard runs horizontally through the middle of the photograph. South of Foothill Blvd., to the right of center, are the Claremont Colleges. The "U"-shaped buildings of Harvey Mudd College are easily identified. Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Gardens are on the north side of Foothill Blvd., across from Harvey Mudd College. Two major east-west lines in the bottom third of the photo are the Santa Fe and the Pacific Electric (later Southern Pacific) railroad tracks. They cross each other just left of center with the Santa Fe tracks continuing east and the Pacific Electric tracks heading northeast. Starting east of the railroad track junction and running parallel to the Pacific Electric tracks on the north side is East 1st Street. Arrow Highway is about a half inch below the railroad tracks. Thompson Creek channel runs diagonally from top center to left center of photo. Major north-south routes, from left to right, are Garey Avenue (Pomona), Towne Avenue (Pomona), Mountain Avenue, Indian Hill Avenue (center, with dog-leg), Mills Avenue (east of Harvey Mudd College), Claremont Boulevard (parallel to San Antonio Creek channel) and San Antonio Creek channel (running full length of photo). The Montclair Plaza, with Monte Vista Avenue to the west and the Interstate 10 freeway to the south, is visible in the lower right corner.
