Photograph caption dated November 14, 1961 reads "East and West Valley League high school cross country athletes get a good look at the Pierce College hills every Thursday afternoon when they compete in league meets. Above (pictured), photo shows Van Nuys' Gary Goettelmann about to take lead over bulky field in recent race. Right, Goettelmann is romping home first in the best time of the day, 8:45.6. He has a lower time of 8:43 for the 1.8 mile course. Over 800 prepsters compete each Thursday afternoon in league meets. The harrier season will be climaxed in December by the holding of the all-city preliminaries and finals at Pierce College." See image 00157272 for additional photo in this series.
