Description
This September 1895 photograph reveals a daytime look at various adornments for Sacramento’s Grand Electric Carnival, held to celebrate the July 1895 transmission of hydroelectric power from Folsom to Sacramento’s Station A at Sixth and H streets. In the center of the photograph is a pavilion made of lights. It hangs over the intersection of Eighth and K streets and has the letters NSGW – Native Sons of the Golden West – inscribed atop it. The NSGW was one of the event’s main participants. Below the NSGW decoration are a street car and horse-drawn wagon. The Clunie Theater can be seen to the immediate right at 811 K St. In the distance, and in the center of the photograph, is the tower of the city’s new post office, built in 1894 at the northeast corner at Seventh and K.
