Description
Beate Gordon was born on October 25th, 1924 in Vienna and grew up in Tokyo. Beate and Joseph Gordon both helped draft and translate the Allied-created Japanese constitution. At age 22, Beate Gordon, having grown up in Japan, was vital in the inclusion of women's rights in the constitution. She discusses how she came to be in such an important position and how she helped convince the Japanese officials about the importance of women's rights in the new constitution. Joseph Gordon talks about the effects of translating the newly drafted constitution and how the document was created out of a kind of "humanism." He also speculates about how the Japanese economy was allowed to flourish after WWII.
