Description
506 N Magnolia with Edward DeWitt Arthur in front of his grandmother (Fanny Arthur Spence)'s home. "Situated at the head of Magnolia avenue is the cozy home ofJ.P.Spence, brother of the late E.F. Spence, one of the founders of the town. The place consists of five acres, all set to citrus trees, which bear fruit of exceptionally fine quality. The house stands in a sheltered nook at the base of the foothills, and the site commands an excellent view of the entire valley, the ocean and Catalina Island. A few acres on the slope of the hillside have just been set to olive, peach and apricot trees. Mr. Spence has had an extended experience in fruit culture, having for a number of years been engaged in the business in Santa Clara county previous to coming here." Monrovia Messenger Souvenir Edition 1897.
