Photograph caption dated March 3, 1956 reads, "Pierce Junior College's Ernie Shelby, left, and Valley's Ken Dennis seem to be crossing the finish line in the 100-yard dash in a dead heat. But after long deliberation by the judges first place was awarded to Dennis in 9.9s. Dennis also won the 220 while Shelby captured the broad jump and placed second in the 220 lows."
