George F. Haas was born in Westport, Mendocino County. In 1933,he hitchhiked to Calaveras Big Trees State Park where he was employed. By 1934 became head park ranger, serving until 1935. While working here, compiled history from original settlers to region into book, Guide to the Calaveras Big Trees.
North Grove was acquired by James L. Sperry in 1855. In Spring of 1856 he built the Big Trees Hotel or Mammoth Grove Hotels as was called in earlier days.
