Description
Photograph of a wisteria tree covering a house with its branches and leaves, San Pedro Street, Los Angeles, ca.1920. The tree, stemming from the center of the house, is leaning up against the left wall of the house and branching out wildly. Its branches and leaves cover the gables on the façade of the house. The house is surrounded by a picket fence. A building nearby displays an advertisement which reads: "[...] standard[...], [...]emo[...]".
"The deciduous trees or large shrubs are native to China and Japan. P. hispida, commonly known as the Epaulette Tree or Wisteria Tree, can be grown as a bush with a height of up to 12 feet or a tree, growing up to 50 feet high. The Epaulette Tree is covered in oblong leaves up to 8 inches in length. These trees begin to blossom when they are 8 to 10 feet high. In early summer, fragrant, creamy white flowers are borne in suspended clusters 4 to 9 inches long. These are followed by fuzzy seedpods that persist on the branches well into the winter." -- unknown author.
