Description
Market & San Fernando Streets with electric light tower in the distance. St. Joseph's Church on the right. Scaffolding is still on the post office at the far right. This image was featured on a series of collectible cards produced by The Image Group in 1992, with the following caption: Dominating the intersection of Market and Santa Clara streets is the famous Electric Light Tower, some 237 feet tall. Inspired by J. J. Owens of the Mercury newspaper, the tower that lighted all of downtown San Jose survived the 1906 earthquake, but collapsed in December, 1915 during a wind storm. The tower was the most powerful concentration of electric light recognized world-wide. It remained a symbol of downtown San Jose for thirty years. This photograph is looking northward from City Hall down Market toward Santa Clara street.
