Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Title supplied by cataloger.; Image is a reproduction. Arzu Arda Kosar was born in Turkey in 1970 and came to the U.S. in 1989 to attend the University of Pittsburgh. There she met and married fellow student Erol Kosar, a first-generation Turkish-American. They moved to Southern California in 1992 when Erol was named a fellow in USC�s cardiology department. He later established his own cardiology practice in Torrance, CA. Arzu was cultural affairs chair of the local Turkish American Association. Arzu Arda's uncle, Ismail, is perched atop a pony led by his older brother. The tradition of circumcision calls for the boy to parade around the village on a horse before the operation and receive applause and gifts as a rite of passage. Photo taken in Istanbul, Turkey.
