This circa 1925 photograph shows a short strip of businesses on the south side of Main Street in Elk Grove, California. From left to right are the Rowe and Pedient Pool Room, a barber shop; a Martha Washington Grocery Store; the Poppy lunch room and confectionary; and the United States Post Office. As of 1923, there were more than 56 stores operating in California within the Martha Washington chain. The company’s Superior California headquarters and warehouse were based in Sacramento. Partially visible to the far left of the photograph is a rail car sitting upon the Southern Pacific Railroad.
