Description
This 1996 photograph captures a sculpture of Franciscan missionary Father Junipero Serra located within the camellia grove near the east entrance to Capitol Park. The statue, dedicated on April 7, 1967, was funded by the Native Sons of the Golden West and the California State Legislature. The 8-foot-tall, bronze statue depicts Serra praying before the State of California. The work was completed by artist Maurice Loriaux, whose commission included a payment of $38,000.
