Description
Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1899-1989.
When Robinson came to UCLA, he teamed with Lincoln High's Washington to form what Herald-Examiner columnist Mel Durslag called "the best backfield twosome of that era." In 1946, the Cleveland Rams moved to L.A. and signed Washington and UCLA teammate Woody Strode, thus breaking the color barrier in the modern era of the NFL. The next year, Robinson made his first appearance with the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Left ro right, Jackie Robinson, Ned Mathews, Bill Overlin, and Kenny Washington.
