He describes racial differences in Texas, and why he wrote the book from the point-of-view of a white Catholic man. Cartwright talks about a character in the book who runs away from home and comes back years later. He discusses that this is his first published novel, but has been writing for years. He talks about his background in engineering and business management. Martinson asks Cartwright to read a passage about the death of a parent.
