Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Title supplied by cataloger.; Image is a reproduction. Verona Jemmott Burks was born in Belize, Central America, in 1951. When she was still a young girl, in 1958, Verona and her family immigrated to the United States in the hopes of finding increased economic opportunities. The family settled in the Miracle Mile area of Los Angeles and later moved further south. Growing up in Los Angeles, Verona retained strong ties to the Belizean community and later became the CEO of the nonprofit organization Consortium for Belizean Development. An unidentified woman, who is either a DJ, possibly related to Uncle Fredlocks, or announcer at a beauty contest, holds a microphone and looks at notes, circa 1985.
