Description
Photograph of a shell bursting in front of a trench at Fort de la Pompelle in Reims, France, ca.1919. A large cloud of dirt has been thrown skyward by the impact of the shell at right. A French-occupied trench is at center and the three soldiers manning it are ducking to avoid the flying debris. A large pallet of sandbags is also at center. The top of the trench is surrounded by a tangled web of barbed wire. There are low hills in the distance.
