"This mosque is within the barracks of the West African Rgt [regiment] a ? compound of men from the many tribes which are native to the Protectorate of Sierra Leone. The mosque was built by public subscriptions, the money being collected from Mohammedans. Within these barracks, 2 out of 10 companies of troops are Mohammedans. the rest are pagans with less than 20 xns [Christians]. An ?almani or priest conducts the regular services and these are recognised by those in authority - Friday being an offical sabbath day. This is mosque No 5 in Freetown. A few years ago there was only one. Note the star and crescent at top of Dome." Two men standing outside mosque. Methodist Missionary work in West Africa had begun in 1811 with Coke's mission to Sierra Leone. A second station was opened on the River Gambia in 1821, and on the Gold Coast in 1834.
