Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1899-1989. The original Muscle Beach was located south of the Santa Monica pier, at a long, wooden platform constructed by the Works Progress Administration. There, the body was celebrated in its sunbaked glory as young men (and more than a few women) showed off their physical prowess by performing acrobatic and gymnastic routines. The original Muscle Beach disappeared in the late 1950s, but was revived in the 1960s. September 6, 1981.
