Descriptive caption: "Battle of Palo Alto. May 8th 1846, between 2900 Americans, under Gen. Taylor, and 6000 Mexicans, commanded by Gen. Arista. The Mexicans were driven from the ground with great loss. It is remarkable for being the first battle of the war."
