Bust-length portrait. "From Senator Robert Howe & Hammond Family Album" -- handwriten on verso.
Born in New York in 1831, parents were Abraham Howe and Elizabeth Littlejohn. Came to California in 1853 by vessel. Worked in gold mines (1853-1862) in Tuolumne County, before becoming a commission merchant (1862-1882, San Francisco). Served in the legislature - Assembly and Senate. Died in 1915.
