Description
This detailed poster advertises a circus performance by Dan Castello’s Overland Circus and Menagerie, slated to take place at the California State Fair on Sept. 9 and 10, 1869. The circus actually ran for six full days, from Sept. 6 to 11. The poster is covered by a random number of fonts and renditions of several circus-type animals. Owned by Dan Castello, the show proved to be the nation’s first transcontinental circus, having been transported the entire way by rail. After departing Sacramento, the circus went on to tour various other points in the state until October of the same year. While still in California, Castello sold his circus, eventually partnering with the legendary P.T. Barnum in 1871.
