Mary Gilmore Barnum was born in Grinnell, Iowa in 1869. She graduated from Los Angeles High School and UCLA. She was a high school principal and became active in education in Los Angeles, serving on many boards and commissions, including the Y.W.C.A., Woman's Progressive League, the National Education Association and Order of the Eastern Star.
Photograph used for an article dated April 27, 1937; the caption reads "Another past president of the Friday Morning Club, Mrs. O. Shephard Barnum is shown above when she was a young matron." Mrs. Barnum was vice-president of the California State Board of Education.
