Description
The bicycles in this photograph were a new design at the time. They replaced the more common ordinary, high wheel, or penny-farthing. The "safety" bicycles in the photograph gained popularity in the late 1880s. "Safeties" featured two wheels of the same size and chain driven rear wheel. Written on the back of the photograph: "Bike race, Argicultural Park, July 4, 1890. Start of one mile safety event. The Safety, the wierd-looking contraption in this picture was just then displacing the high-wheeled ordinaries. "
