Description
This portable diathermy machine, carried in a black case, was manufactured by E. J. Rose Manufacturing Company, Scientific Electric Apparatus, of Los Angeles. This Type L model no. 522, was a 110-Volts, 7 Amps, 6 Cycle machine, designed to provide radio frequency currents to the patient's skin. Currents would warm the skin and nearby organs, supposedly aiding the treatment of a wide variety of conditions and deseases from adhesions to varicose veins. Radio Frequency (RF) is generated by using a transformer to step-up the AC mains (110V, 7A, 60Hz) by activating three spark gaps (on each cycle of the AC mains)and by exciting a resonant circuit (consisting of coils of wire and plate capacitors) to produce currents with frequencies in the AM commerical radio band. This model also includes an Oudin resonator that produces much higher RF voltages but at a lower current. These early machines (more than fifty manufacturers world wide) would interfere with safety, commercial and radar services.
