Photograph was edited for publication purposes The Schaefer Air Service was the first FAA-certified air ambulance service in the United States. Part of the Schaefer Ambulance Service, it was founded by J. Walter Schaefer in 1947, in Los Angeles. Photograph caption dated March 27, 1956 reads "Patient transferred. Completing service, patient is brought to airport and put into ambulance for transfer to hospital.
