Joseph Duffey was chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities (1977-1982) and Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs. He became president of American University in Washington, D.C. (1991-1993) and chancellor of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst (1982-1991). He served as director of the United States Information Agency (1993-1999).; Kenneth Donahue was director of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (1966-1979).
