Photograph of the view looking west on Second Street from Spring Street, Los Angeles, ca.1886. A street car is moving down Second Street as a pedestrian crosses the intersection. City Hall (1884-1888) is on the right, a site later used for the Fire Department and Police Station this building was sold to I.W. Hellman in March 26, 1895, but the City was allowed to continue usage of the structure for jail purposes until the completion of the 3rd City Jail on First Street, between Hill Street and Broadway, in late 1896. The Hollenbeck Hotel dominates the left side of the street (as it looked before the 3rd and 4th floors were added in 1888), beyond which the steeple of First Presbyterian Church is visible. A few horse-drawn vehicles are on Second Street. Legible signs include: "B.F. Coulter, proprietor of the"....
