Description
Double-sided reprint newspaper focusing on local history preservation. The front is a reprint of an article dated August 23, 1964, "A Pioneer Village for S.J.? Nice Idea, Preserve Past; Rub Is, Where To Put It?" The article discusses ideas for a pioneer village in San Jose similar to those in other places like Bakersfield, Wawona, Salt Lake City. The reverse page is an article from October 20, 1963, "Area Landmarks Slipping Away One By One," comprising a near full-page letter to the editor from Rev. William N. Abeloe, "Historian Sounds Call," and a smaller article, "Why Not San Jose? Other Cities Find A Way." Photos include: 1) City Historian Clyde Arbuckle Inspects Sign at Gate of Roberto Adobe, Built 1839 2) Roberto Adobe Acquired Second Story from Italian Sea Captain 3) Old Agnew Depot Waits Its Fate at the End of 96 Years 4) Pellerano House, 170 San Augustine St., A Type From 1876 5) Miss Doreen Jones in front of Gonzalez-Peralta Adobe: "Believed to be more than 130 years old, the adobe is in the Park Center urban renewal area. The historian, Rev. William N. Abeloe, asks what its fate will be." 6) Gonzalez-Peralta Adobe wall being shaved by workman: "One wall of the historic Peralta adobe, perhaps the oldest building in San Jose, was 'shaved' a bit in 1949, when this picture was taken, to make room for a new structure. Can anything be done to save this monument to San Jose's past?"
