Photograph was edited for publication purposes Photograph caption dated September 12, 1961 reads, "Residents protest access road closure. State barricades Pacoima street for freeway." Residents of a 20-block "island" in Pacoima protest against sealing off one of the area's two access routes. Residents live in an area bounded by Branford St. on the north, the proposed route of the Golden State Freeway on the east, the Tujunga Wash channel on the south and Arleta St. on the west. Blocking off Tonopah Street, a major access route, would isolate the residents.
