View of the 134 Ventura Freeway looking east, with the 5 freeway exchange splitting on the left, and the L.A. River below. An exit sign for the San Fernando Road exit is visible on the freeway along the right, directly above the river. The road running parallel to the river at the bottom of the photo is Zoo Drive. Originally an alluvial river that ran freely across a flood plain, the L.A. River's path was unstable and unpredictable with the mouth of the river moving frequently from one place to the other. The Army Corps of Engineers began an ambitious project of completely encasing the river's bed and banks in concrete leaving only a trickle of water flowing down its middle. Today, this intermittent river flows for most of its 51 miles through a narrow concrete channel. The 134 Ventura Freeway is an east/west artery that leaves the 101 Fwy and hits the 5 Fwy and then connects to the 210 Fwy. This is an extension of the Ventura Freeway, which is also the name for part of the 101.
