Description
Photograph of an aerial view of Beverly Hills Racetrack and surrounding areas, Santa Monica Boulevard and Wilshire Boulevard, Beverly Hills, ca.1921. A thick line of trees separate the racetrack and the smaller community just north of it. Mountains are visible in the background. "Fidelity Bank and the Beverly Wilshire Hotel are located near or on this land now. About 1/2 of the Speedway site is occupied by the Beverly Wilshire Hotel erected in 1927, opened for business in 1928. The Speedway was built by an association of Beverly Hills citizens known as The Speedway Association. The first race was February 22, 1919 (Washington's birthday). Last race was July 4, 1923. In 1924 builings were torn down and the ground subdivided for residential and business purposes." - Mr. Puck.
