Description
2008-0154. Bust length portrait of Morris M. Estee. Initials of artist, "W.H." on lower left side of image. Ran as Republican candidate for governor in 1882 and, again, in 1894. Also have second and third copy. Copy 2 is original lithograph, but cropped. From the collection of Dr. Dean L. Mawdsley. Morris March Estee was born in Pennsylvania in 1833. Arrived in California via Panama in 1853 where spent some time in mines of El Dorado and Amador counties. Settled in Sacramento where opened law practice until 1866 when moved to San Francisco. Served several terms in the Assembly, was Republican candidate for governor in 1882 and in 1894. Served in the constitutional convention of 1878, was selected as first United States Judge of the Hawaiian Islands in 1900. Died in 1903.
