Description
INstallation of stone seating at the Mountain Theater (aka Cushing Memorial Theatre) by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began in 1933 and was completed in1940. Quote on back from article in July/August 1983 of "The Californians" by Lincoln Farley: "Of all the CCC work on Mt. Tamalpais, perhaps the most impressive was the building of the Mountain Theatre's stone seats, which also served as risers between the contouring aisles. Here, workers are using 10-15 foot tripods and derrick riggings to set the big rocks. About 5,000 stones (each weighing between 600 and 4,000 pounds) were used. Each stone was buried so deeply that only a tiny part of its upright bulk remained visible." CCC photo, c. 1933, courtesy of National Archives".
