8. The Father of the Forest. "Partially buried in the ground. Circumference at the root 112 feet. Estimated height, before its downfall, 450 feet". Shows fallen tree -- 10. Stump and log of the original big tree, 1855, from photographs. Shows stump with ladder to top and stump with figures seated atop, building on left.

Discovered in 1852 by Augustus T. Dowd, area became a state park in 1931 - Calaveras Big Trees State Park.
