Description
Tel Aviv: Girls clean and check their weapons recently during basic training in the Israeli army. All men and women who are physically fit serve in the armed forces--the girls for 20 months, and the men for three years. Dual military and agricultural training enables the soldiers to both defend and cultivate the 'nahals,' armed kibutzes set up in strategic areas such as Golan Heights, located in former Arab territory. Other men soldiers go on to further combat training, while some of the girls go on to police school to learn how to direct traffic and spot potential saboteurs.
