Photograph caption dated August 28, 1984 reads, "The remains of a 1978 Ford Ranchero lie crumpled beside South Pasadena's Orange Grove Street crossing as the Amtrak passenger train that struck it draws slowly away. At right, driver Samuel Dixon, 35, lies on a stretcher as paramedics administer intravenous fluids before carrying him to Huntington Memorial Hospital, where his condition was critical but stable. They labored for half and hour to extricate Dixon from the wreckage. Pasadena police Sgt. Douglas Brown said it appeared that Dixon tried to drive his truck around a barricade lowered to warn of the [caption cut]."
