Description
(SIDE 1) PASETTA, Peter J. P.O. Box 218 Saratoga. Mr. Pasetta, a resident of the city since 1934, developed the city’s first residential subdivision in 1940 and its first industrial park in 1945. Augsut 27, 1974. Santa Clara (1934): poor condition of business district, bad image of the town as a residential area. Renovation program (1939-40): sources of support, success of program. Unpopularity of city for potential residents already living in area (Thirties). University Square subdivision (1940): project’s success, land and property costs in subdivision (lot, improvements, house), where the purchasers originated, number of houses sold, rate of selling. Effects of the war: end to most residential construction, war-priority construction, war-housing (restrictions on building plan, sale to “immigrant war workers” only, number of residents who stayed after the war). The industrial park: reasons for beginning project, flexibility of park facilities, success of the park, “we were the first” in the valley, selection of industries for the park, the park as a unique project (development by individuals, interest expresses by other cities), difficulties and advantages for recruiting industry to Santa Clara, methods of recruitment, “follow the leader” affect in recruitment, city’s offerings for potential industries, community’s cooperation in project. Popular attitudes towards industrial development. Local employment before and after the park opened. Population influx: lag between industrial and residential growth, Sunny-brae (1951), costs of the houses, tie-in between industrial and residential subdivisions, popular attitudes towards growth. Urban renewal: desire to renovate, condition of the old buildings (1960), feelings of the merchants, plan for redeveloping downtown area, need for a downtown area. Length—35 minutes.
