Description
Established in 1849, Sacramento was formed along the waterfront and extended up J Street toward Sutter’s Fort. The Old Sacramento District is a national historic landmark due to its rich place in California’s history. A quarter of a million immigrants came to the Sacramento area, withstanding the ravages of fire, flood and disease to build their lives. Stagecoaches, riverboats, and the transcontinental railroads all transported goods into and out of Sacramento. In the 50 years following the completion of the transcontinental railroad, however, businesses located in Old Sacramento would prosper and then relocate to a new area. Cheap hotels, bars, and labor agencies would move in to occupy the old buildings. The area began to deteriorate and by the late 1940s the area was declared to be a problem. The 1950s saw the proposal of redevelopment of the area and was declared as a project, the California State Parks declared seven acres as a historic park, helping local officials to envision the area’s potential.
