In this photo we see His Eminence Roger Cardinal Mahony (b. February 27, 1936), the fourth Roman Catholic Archbishop of Los Angeles, wearing a red hardhat and walking on the construction site of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angeles. All of the people walking next to, and behind him, can be seen wearing white hardhats. Construction of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angeles began in October 1998 with work on the Parking Garage. Excavation for the foundations of the Cathedral began in May 1999. The formal Blessing and Dedication took place on September 2, 2002. The Spanish architect, the world renowned, Pritzker Architecture Prize winning Professor Jose Rafael Moneo, designed the Cathedral and upon completion, the site was 5.6 acres bound by Temple Street, Grand Avenue, Hill Street and the Hollywood Freeway. The final cost was $189.7 million. Photo dated: June 18, 2001.
