Description
The Old Home Bakers at 3226 Montgomery Street is shown in this October 20, 1954, photograph. The business was founded in 1923 and, by 1954, was distributing its bread as far north as Redding and as far south as Lodi. It also prided itself as the only major Sacramento bakery that twisted their dough before baking, the idea being that two lengths of dough twisted about one another need to rise only half the distance, thereby making a fuller and fresher loaf. Prior to taking the name of the Rainbo Baking Company in 1958, the company was known as the Old Home Bakers, bakers of Betsy Ross Bread, hence the Betsy Ross brand billboard to the right side of the photograph.
