Description
Founded in 1877, Evergreen holds two claims to fame: it is the oldest existing cemetery in Los Angeles to have never been relocated and is also one of the city's largest cemeteries with its 300,000 grave sites. Prominent Angeleno pioneers, such as Biddy Mason, members of the Workman, Hollenbeck, and Van Nuys families, as well as various celebrities, are buried here. In 1957, the California Department of Consumer Affairs created the Endowment Care Fund of which a certain percentage of the basic cemetery fee covers the maintenance and sanitation of Evergreen's grounds.
