Description
The monolithic Elks Lodge Number 6 at 925 11th St. is shown in this 1930 photo. Fundraising for the $1.5 million dollar structure began in 1905. In the one year that it took a crew of 150 men to construct the building, 1,400 tons of structural steel were woven, 5,000 yards of concrete were poured, 165,250 bricks were laid, and about 75 carloads of Gladding, McBean and Company terra cotta were used. The building also became the city’s tallest at 242 feet, besting the 237-foot Capitol dome. Ground was broken on construction with a gold-spaded shovel on Jan. 12, 1925, by the order’s Grand Exalted Ruler, John G. Price of Boston, Mass.
